Adrian Younge is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer who has collaborated with icons such as Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Wu-Tang Clan. A former law professor, Younge made a bold transition into film and music, first gaining widespread attention as the composer and editor of Black Dynamite—a modern blaxploitation cult classic with a soundtrack hailed by the LA Times as one of the top ten of the year. His 2011 album Something About April fused psychedelic soul with cinematic textures, catching the attention of major hip-hop producers. Timbaland famously sampled it for Jay-Z’s Magna Carta… Holy Grail, and Younge’s music has since been tapped by DJ Premier, No I.D., and Schoolboy Q.

Younge is also the founder of Linear Labs, an analog-centric label and recording studio that champions live instrumentation and vintage production techniques. Through Linear Labs, he’s produced acclaimed projects for Ghostface Killah, Souls of Mischief, The Delfonics, and more. In 2017, Younge teamed up with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) to form The Midnight Hour, a band that merges soul, jazz, and cinematic music. Together, they’ve become prolific scorers for film and television, contributing music to Luke Cage, Raising Kanan, Boogie, Bitchin’: The Sound and Fury of Rick James, and many more.

In 2019, Younge and Muhammad co-founded Jazz Is Dead, a record label and multimedia platform that reimagines jazz through intergenerational collaboration. The project has yielded new recordings with legends like Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Marcos Valle, and Tony Allen, and has grown into a powerful live series with international acclaim. In 2021, Younge released The American Negro, a landmark multimedia work including an album, short film (TAN), and podcast (Invisible Blackness). Centered on the evolution of racism in America, the project weaves together music, narrative, and historical critique—featuring guests such as Mahershala Ali, Chuck D, and Dr. Melina Abdullah. For Adrian Younge, the music is never separate from the message—it’s a vessel for truth, liberation, and cultural memory.

ARTDONTSLEEP and Jazz Is Dead Present: Adrian Younge

Elijah Fox is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Fox began playing piano at the age of 11. He was mentored early on by the late Yusuf Salim, a renowned pianist who once played alongside jazz legend Charlie Parker. Under Salim’s guidance, Fox began performing in local jazz clubs, laying the foundation for his deep-rooted connection to jazz and improvisation.

He went on to study piano at Oberlin Conservatory, where he trained under acclaimed musicians such as Sullivan Fortner, Billy Hart, Dan Wall, and Gary Bartz. After graduating in 2017, Fox relocated to New York City, continuing to hone his craft and expand his musical reach.

Fox’s piano composition “East Village” was famously sampled by Drake and 21 Savage on the track “Major Distribution,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. His work as a producer and session musician includes collaborations with a diverse roster of artists, including SZA, Masego, YG, ScHoolboy Q, Denzel Curry, Tate McRae, Musiq Soulchild, Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis, J. Cole, and many more. In addition to his collaborations, Fox continues to release his own original compositions and sample packs, further establishing his voice in both the producer and composer realms.

His impressionistic piano piece “Wyoming” became a viral sensation on TikTok and has since amassed over 20 million streams on Spotify. Signed to Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) as a writer and composer, Fox maintains a steady output of genre-blurring material. His sound is a distinctive blend of jazz, Impressionist classical influences, and psychedelic soul.

Fox also tours internationally as the keyboardist for UK drummer and producer Yussef Dayes, with performances spanning stages across the globe. As a solo artist, he has played sold-out shows throughout the U.S. and Europe. In addition to his work under his given name, he releases instrumental music under the alias @Soren Sostrom, exploring even more experimental and atmospheric terrain.

ZeyZey Presents: Elijah Fox (Sunset Show)

Os Mutantes (“The Mutants”) are one of Brazil’s most iconic and influential psychedelic rock bands, deeply intertwined with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. Formed in São Paulo, the group fused the countercultural energy of Anglo-American acts like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly & the Family Stone with Brazil’s own rich musical heritage—bossa nova, samba, tropicália, and the avant-garde spirit of Brazilian modernism. Their sound was radical, genre-blurring, and defiantly playful—instantly recognizable and impossible to replicate.

Their impact has resonated far beyond Brazil. Os Mutantes have been name-dropped or championed by artists like Beck, who paid homage with his single “Tropicália,” and The Bees, who covered “A Minha Menina.” Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal), and David Byrne (Talking Heads) have all cited the band’s influence, with Byrne even reissuing their music through his Luaka Bop label. Kurt Cobain, a longtime admirer, famously requested a reunion in 1993. While that didn’t happen right away, the group returned to the stage in 2006 at London’s Barbican, followed by a North American tour—including shows with The Flaming Lips—despite lineup changes and the absence of original vocalist Rita Lee.

Determined to keep the legacy alive, founding guitarist Sérgio Dias reassembled the band with a new lineup featuring Esmeria Bulgari, Henrique Peters, Vinicius Junqueira, and Claudio Tchernev. They released Haih Or Amortecedor in 2009—marking their first album in 35 years—and toured extensively, playing major festivals like Glastonbury. Further collaborations followed, including a track with Of Montreal for Red Hot + Rio 2, and in 2017, Carly Bryant joined the band on vocals, guitar, and keys, bringing new energy to the project. Their 2017 single “Black and Grey” signaled a fresh chapter for the band, who continue to perform and record today. As BBC Music noted, theirs has been a “head-turning comeback,” and as The Guardian put it, “There was nothing quite like Os Mutantes, and there still isn’t.”
